2 cenizo
(Sp. model spelled same [seníso] probably < ceniza 'ashes' [due to the color of the plant's leaves] < Vulgar Latin * cinlsia 'ashes mixed with hot coals,' a collective noun derived from Latin cinerem 'ashes')1) Texas: 1892. A salt-bush, including the Atriplex canescens.2) Texas: 1936. A silverleaf, including the Leucophyllum frutescens.Alternate form: ceniza. The DRAE references cenizo as a wild plant of the Chenopodiaceae family that has an erect, herbaceous, white-colored stalk that is approximately two to two-and-a-half feet in height. The plant's leaves are rhomboidal in shape, serrated, green on top, and ash-colored on the undersides. The flowers are greenish and form an irregular spreading cluster. Santamaría also references cenizo and gives three distinct meanings. In northern Mexico and Texas, it refers to a scrophulariaceous bush that is used as a home remedy to reduce fever. It is also known in Spanish as palo cenizo and yerba de cenizo; in Texas as cenicilla or cenicillo. The Latin name is Leuco-phyllum texanum. In Tabasco, Mexico, and southeastern Mexico, cenizo is a melastomaceous plant ( Miconia argentea) that is native to tropical climates and is especially common on the isthmus. In northeastern Mexico and New Mexico it is a chenopodiaceous plant ( Atriplex canescens) whose seeds are used for food by some native tribes. It is also known as chamiso (along the border) and costillas de vaca (in Zacatecas, Mexico). Its leaves, which have a salty flavor, are used as fodder. -
3 mesquite
( mezquite [meskíte], apocope of mizquicuáhuitl 'mesquite tree' < Nahuatl mízquitl 'tree that produces gum that can be used as dye' and cuáhuitl 'tree')1) DARE: 1805; Texas: 1834. A shrub or small tree of the genus Prosopis, especially P. juliflora. By extension, a thicket formed by these plants.Alternate forms: masketo, mesketis, meskit, mesquiet, mesquit, mesquito, mezquit, mezquite, moscheto, mosquito, musqueto, musquit, skeet.2) Texas: 1898. Referenced by the DARE as "a horsemint."3) Louisiana: 1913. A variety of huisache, including Acacia farnesiana.4) See mesquite grass. The DRAE defines mezquite as an American rubber-producing tree of the Mimosa family, similar to an acacia. An extract obtained from the leaves can be used to cure ophthalmia. Santamaría describes the tree in more detail than the DRAE. He gives the genus and species Prosopis juliflora (Cf. above) and indicates that it is a leguminous tree found in abundance in Mexico. It may grow to a great height, but ordinarily does not exceed seven to nine feet. Its branches are spread apart and don't provide a very complete shade; its leaves are composed of an even number of spiny leaflets; its fragrant white flowers grow in sprays or sprigs; and it produces a beanlike fruit. The tree grows in high altitudes and arid climates, especially in sandy ground near the edge of rivers. Its bark exudes a pungent gum used by some residents of Mexico as a food and as an adulterating agent for gum arabic when dissolved in sugar water. The tree is also valued for its compact heavy wood, which can be polished; its fruit and leaves, which are often used for forage; its seeds, which are toasted and mixed with coffee. When ground into a flourlike substance, the fruit makes a pleasant-tasting drink, and the leaves when boiled are used as a home remedy to cure inflammation of the eyes (the curative is known as bálsamo de mezquite). -
4 palo hierro
(Sp. model spelled same [pálo] [see above] and [jéro ] < Latin ferrum 'iron')OED: 1894. Ironwood ( Olneya tesota), a hardwood tree native to arid regions. The OED indicates that it produces racemes of white flowers. Santamaría references palo (de) hierro or palo (de) fierro as the generic name of various trees and bushes with extremely strong wood, especially the leguminous O. tesota of northwestern Mexico. Also known as tésota, uña de gato, cat's claw. The Indians of Sonora, Mexico, and Arizona toast the seed of this plant and grind them to make a type of pinole. The name palo de hierro (as well as its variations) also applies to other leguminous plants, including the resin-producing Mesua ferrea, whose bark is used as a pectoral and as a home remedy for snake bites. -
